II. Creating a Guiding Coalition
A simple, yet effective three prong governance structure was developed to drive the transformation throughout the organization. The first prong is known as the Board and consists of all of the direct reports to the organization’s leader. With impassioned and committed leadership being a key success factor in a transformation, the alignment of this team behind the transformation was essential. But to truly be successful they needed more than alignment, they needed passion and a sophisticated understanding of the leadership behaviors necessary to drive change. This group, through a series of meetings and some strategic retreats, was put through an intensive battery of training and soul-search on leadership skills such as creating energy within an organization, managerial courage, designing and executing strategy, coaching and understanding group psychology and human behavior. There was an open, collaborative, fun and caring tone set in the leadership team meetings. They were run in such a way as to show that the command and control culture was gone, this team would work together to make decisions as a team. The leader’s actions set the tone that the communications between the members of this team would be open and candid and personal. (This open style was something of a jarring, but ultimately welcomed, contrast to the style of the former leader of the group.)Through this training, indoctrination and a number of formal and informal teambuilding techniques this group emerged as a high performance team.
